Caption on photograph: Queensland 1899. Panorama of Roma from the Bore Derrick - No. 419. Image looks towards the noth west with the Grafton Range on the horizon.
Other information indicates that the photo was taken from the derrick of the artesian bore, Queensland Government No 1, on Roma's Hospital Hill. When this bore produced an inadequate water supply, the well Queensland Govt. No.2 was drilled nearby, which resulted in the discovery of natural petroleum gas, the first significant indication of hydrocarbons in Australia.
