Downhill view of Gympie's main street, Mary Street, in 1879. Horses are seen tethered to posts in front of the shops lining the street. The shop on the right of the photo, in the foreground, could be one of the many tobacconists in Mary Street. In 1883, there were four tobacconists in the street - B. Bytheway, R. Gordon, J. Lyons and M. Newman (The Brisbane Post Office Directory and Country Guide, 1883-4. Brisbane: Watson, Ferguson & Co. p. 307).
