A railway bridge across the river was built in 1891 and a railway link to Brisbane made in1887. The Burnett Bridge for vehicular traffic can be seen in the background to the right.

Bundaberg Base Hospital opened by the Governor of Queensland 1914. A small cottage hospital was previously on this site from the 1880s.
